Google+ is a great way to build your authority, to improve your search engine rankings and to get more traffic, to get your posts indexed by Google almost immediately, to improve your click-through rates on the search engine results page (by claiming authorship)… and much more.
Google Plus is the fastest growing social network and most probably it will soon dethrone Twitter – the current #2 behind Facebook. In other words, G+ is huge, it will only be getting bigger and you should no longer ignore Google+.
However, to get the most out of Google+ and to enjoy all its benefits for your business, dedication is required. Setting up a Google+ Profile and/or business page and writing 10 or 15 posts won’t get you anywhere.
As with all social media platforms, patience and continued effort is required in order to succeed. Now, this doesn’t mean that you need to spend 2 hours every day on G+ for the next 2 years to get some rewards.
The key to success is spending a little bit of time on G+ every day (or at least almost every day) and to perform the right kinds of actions.
5 minutes a day is better than nothing, 15 minutes would be great and 30 minutes would just be fantastic.
But, even more important, you need to use your Google+ time wisely and effectively. In other words, you need a solid plan for your G+ marketing and follow through.
And that’s exactly what this post is all about: Giving you a simple step-by-step plan to help you get the most out of Google+ with the shortest possible time investment.
Just a word of caution: There are various Google+ automation tools available and some of those sellers claim that all it takes to succeed on G+ is to setup the tool, to let it run on autopilot, and all the traffic, signups, sales… will come your way.
Of course, this doesn’t work and will never work. Google+ (as all other social networks) is all about building relationships and that’s something that can’t be automated. If you want to succeed, you need to connect with people and provide value.
Ok, let’s take a look at our Google+ Marketing Plan
#1: G+ Pages & Profiles
Before you get started with your daily G+ marketing routine, I suggest you spend some time researching and circling the top influencers in your niche. Those are the profiles and pages you will comment on, share and +1 (same as like on Facebook).
Make sure, the profiles and pages you select are highly active – lots of people should be commenting, sharing and +1.
How do you find those profiles and pages?
- On your G+ Profile or Page, go to “People” and provide a search string that applies to your niche.
- Use the “Find People” search on FindPeopleOnPlus
- You could also do a search directly on Google with a search string like: “your niche keyword” site:plus.google.com
- It is also possible to add entire niche circles at once. Do a search on Google for “google shared circles database” or “google shared circles spreadsheet”… Here is an example: https://plus.google.com/111551895671908911144/posts
#2: G+ Communities
Do also a research for G+ Communities in your niche and join some of them. Communities are a bit like message boards (but socially integrated) and they offer focused conversations on specific topics.
Join only quality communities with a high activity level and no spam posts and make sure to read the community rules. On your G+ Profile or Page, go to “Communities” and provide a search string that applies to your niche.
#3: Add/Share 3-5 Great Posts Every Day
I recommend you provide 3-5 helpful posts a day on your G+ profile and/or page. This doesn’t mean, you have to come up with several lengthy posts every day. You can also share other people’s posts, photos, videos…
The key is to provide valuable, helpful, interesting… information. If you share other people’s content, I recommend you provide your own headline and a short introduction. It is also a good idea to mention the original content provider (using +name , where name is the G+ name of the person).
Whenever you share someone else’s post, you may show up in the Google SERPS with that content and that’s why it is important to carefully choose your keywords for your post title and intro paragraph. I also recommend you add some hash tags to your post #keyword1 #keyword2…
Ideas for content to post and share:
- Short how to posts
- Answers to commonly asked questions in your niche
- Top lists: Top 5 tips to lose weight…
- Stats and facts relevant to your niche
- Quizzes and surveys
For additional posting ideas, please take a look at my “Top 10 Posting Ideas For Your Facebook Page To Build A Large Audience In No Time” blog post.
I recommend you compile a list of great blogs in your niche, photo sites, quote sites, YouTube channels… so you have plenty of quality content you can share every day. You simply check those resources once or twice a day and share the most interesting and helpful content with your G+ audience.
You could provide those 3-5 posts at once, but it is better to post several times a day. All in all, this should not take more than 10-15 minutes.
#4: Comment, Share and +1 Posts of Top Influencer’s
Go to the top influencers in your niche and comment on their posts. Try to be the first to comment and provide something useful – don’t just say: “great post…”. Also, share and +1 some of those posts.
Ideally, you should visit some of the pages and profiles of your top influencers several times a day and actively engage in the ongoing conversations. It is also a great idea to +1 some of the comments of other commentators to build new relationships and grow your circles.
As already mentioned, whenever you share a post of one of those top influencers, provide your own title and a short intro and mention the original posters name (+name).
Ideally, you should spend at least 10-15 minutes a day commenting on various high activity pages and profiles a day.
#5: Contribute To Communities
Visit some of the high activity G+ Communities you previously researched and engage in the ongoing communications – comment, +1 and share.
There are communities with thousands of members and if you constantly provide great value, you can gain a large number of followers (people adding you to their circles) really fast.
Spend 10-15 minutes a day participating in various communities
#6: Reply to Comments
Visit your Google+ page and/or profile several times a day and reply to comments on your posts. If someone shares one of your posts, give a +1 and provide a short thank you message – “Thanks for sharing”.
#7: Grow Your Circles
Spend a few minutes every day adding new people to your circles. You can add people from your niche communities, people who comment on your top influencers pages/profiles or simply do a search on the Google+ People section.
This is important to build new relationships and to incite people to add you to their circles as well.
Occasional Tasks – Weekly or Monthly…
#8: Link To Your G+ Page/Profile
Mention your Google+ Page/Profile every now and then on Facebook, Twitter and other social networks.
#9: More Pages, Profiles & Communities
Find more great pages and profiles of influencers in your niche. Comment on those pages and build relationships. Also, find and join more highly active G+ Communities where members of your niche are hanging out.
#10: Share Your Blog Posts
If you have a blog, share and +1 all your blog posts. You can also post a short version of your blog post on your G+ Profile or Page mentioning only the most important bullet points and linking back to the original blog post.
Use a keyword rich title and provide some hash tags.
That’s it! A simple G+ marketing plan that will allow you to build relationships, to grow your circles, to get more traffic, to build your brand…
If you have only 10 minutes a day for your G+ marketing, it will be difficult to follow through with this plan. But, as I already mentioned, 10 dedicated minutes is better than nothing and you could focus on certain tasks one day and perform the remaining tasks the other day.
And by the way, feel free to adapt this plan to your likings. Maybe do a little bit more of one task and a little bit less of another. Be creative with the type of content you share with your audience. you could also host a weekly G+ Hangout…
If you have any other great ideas about what kinds of tasks should be on this list, please let us know and leave a comment below.
